ABSTRACT
Introduction China's accession to the World Trade Organization has been seen as a moment of great historical significance. The prospect has not only raised high expectations in the economic but also in the political field. While many people in the West have greeted the resulting new business opportunities with enthusiasm, some have also placed great hopes in China's WTO accession to put the country's political system on a more liberal and democratic path.
