ABSTRACT

Introduction It goes without saying that ?ištiqa:q "derivation" in Arabic has been and still is the most important principle of word creation. It represents the most natural method by which the language has been able to generate the overwhelming majority of its native vocabulary, as well as incorporate and fully assimilate a sizeable number of borrowed elements (Chapter 4). A cursory review of the developmental history of Arabic would soon reveal the vital contribution of this tool in the process of enriching the language and enabling it to cope with the needs and demands that have faced it over the various stages of its growth. And nowadays, with the new circumstances facing it, the huge influxes of new concepts, the increasing rapidity of scientific progress, the wider range of discoveries and inventions, etc., the need to make full use of this principle is unquestionably greater than ever before.
