ABSTRACT

In the present analysis of the sources available our interpretation has been a continuation of earlier research as represented by, e.g., Jarde (1925), Semple (1932), Michell (1940) and Hopper (1979). The sparse contemporary sources mention the biennial system alternating between fallow and crop; systematical growing of specialized fodder plants does not appear to have been commonly practised, and consequently animal farming on a greater scale has been limited to special ecological niches. More generally speaking, Eric Wolf (1966) has contrasted 'mixed farming' or 'balanced livestock and cropraising' with the so-called 'Mediterranean ecotype', which fits fairly well with the picture to which our analysis leads us.
