THEnameofEsnaisoneofthemanyplace-nameswhich havedescendedfromtheancientEgyptian,andhavenot changedthroughthecourseofthecenturies.Tothe GreeksthetownwasknownasLatopolis,forthelatusfish(percaNilotica)wasthedeityofthecity;butthe EgyptiansneveradoptedtheGreekname,andfromthe earliesttimestothepresentdaythetownhasbeencalled Esna.
