MISSEDWARDSdescribesthistempleas"ashedwithout andacameowithin".Itstandsontheleftbankofthe Nile,whichhereflowsroundabendalmostduesouth throughbarrenuninhabiteddesert.Thereasonfor buildingatempleinsuchaplaceisnotapparent,but itseemstohavebeenasacredspotfromtheXIIth dynasty.ItispossiblethatSenusertIIIerectedthefirst shrine,forhisnameoccursinthetemple,andthenames ofpersonsoftheMiddleKingdomarefoundinscribed ontherocksintheneighbourhood,Senusert'sshrine, ifthereeverwasone,hasdisappearedlongsince,and thepresentbuildingdatestothemiddleoftheXVIIIth dynasty,havingbeenerectedbyTehutmesIIIandhis sonAmenhotepII;thefiguresandcartouchesofthe twoKingsalternatethroughoutthetemple.TehutmesIV madesomeadditionsandalterations,andthePharaohs oftheXIXthdynastycontinuedthedecoration,after whichtheEgyptianKingsappeartohavelostinterest inthetempleanditwaslefttodecay.
