ABSTRACT

The puppets are made according to a fixed scheme laid down in antiquity and sanctified by the force of the tradition. This determines their forms, costume and skin colours. The iconography is initially so important as it is through the puppets that the mythological presence of the characters is evoked during a play. During the night wayang, individuals may appear only fleetingly on the stage, so their contours must be precise for the spectators to recognize them.
