ABSTRACT

Own name: according to village; Russian name: Godoberintsy. The Godoberins live in two villages in the Botlikh Region (rajon) of the Daghestan ASSR, Godoberi (Ghid-u) and Zibirkhali (Shchal-u). Their language belongs to the Avaro-Andi-Didoi group (Andi sub-group) of the North-East Caucasian languages. It is closely related to Botlikh. It contains a number of loan-words from Arabic, Persian and Turkish, as well as Avar and Russian; these last two have had a particularly strong influence in recent years. Godoberin is not a written language. Avar is used as the literary language.
