ABSTRACT

A small group of Afghans have been settled in Central Asia for many years. Nothing definite is known of their origin, but it is probable that they, like the Baluchis and Dzhamshids, migrated from northern Afghanistan into Turkmenia (particularly to the Merv oasis, where the majority of them settled), Uzbekistan and Tadzhikistan towards the end of the nineteenth century. Among them are some Sunni Muslims from India, who speak Pariah dialects of the South.
