ABSTRACT
In this chapter I would like to trace the process of modernization in Japan with special reference to the household system. Japan changed greatly after the Meiji Restoration in 1868. Within a short period of less than fifty years, Japan became the first non-Western nation to develop a full-blown capitalistic system. However, the process of modernization was somewhat different from that experienced in the other Western societies, because many traditionally Japanese elements remained.
