ABSTRACT

Inthefirsttwo-thirdsofthisChapter,weamplifythis principleandalsoattempttoshowtheextenttowhichaspeaker's literacyinMSAisrelatedtothelikelihoodofthisphonemic substitutionoccurring.Wealsoexaminehowfarthelocal statusofdialectalvariants,asspecifiedbythemarkings inTable5,isarelevantfactorinthisprocess:givenavariety of'non-standard'dialectalvariantswhichmeetthebasicconditions forreplaceability(morpho-semanticcongruitybetweentheword theyoccurinandanMSAequivalent),howfardoesthedifferent localstatusofthesevariants,asmarkersof'AraborBa9arna identity,seemtopromoteorinhibittheirreplacement?A furtherpointforconsiderationoncertainvariablesiswhat happenswhenthereisaconflictbetweenthedemandsofthe localandsupra-dialectallinguisticprestige-systemsonthe low-prestigedialect.
