Shortagesledtoothercrimes.Therewerecomplicatedcases involvingswindlingoverrationcards.Amerchantfoundwith77 bagsofricewasunabletoconvincetheauthoritiesthattheywereall forhisownuse;butattheendof1944thepositionimprovedso quicklythatmanyhoardersfoundthattheyhadlost.Profiteerswere sternlytreatedbytheGovernment-in1943amanoverchargingon dateswasfinedRs400andamerchantwhohadcorneredall availablesuppliesofwireforfishtrapswhichheproposedtosellat Rs10abundlefoundhisstocktakenoverbytheGovernmentwhich solditatRs2abundle.Considerablefortuneswerehowevermade andBelgravesaysthatafterthewarmanyhouseswerepointedoutas havingbeenbuiltwithblackmarketprofits.ThePAreportedthatin January1944aplotoflandwhichhadsoldthreeyearsbeforeforRs 2,000nowfetchedRs70,000.Howeveronthewholethepeopleof Bahrainseemtohavebehavedmuchlessselfishlyduringthewar thanmanyothers.
