ABSTRACT

In 1935 Si r Fl inders Petrie required more staff for his excavation of an Egyp t i an frontier fortress at Sheikh Zuweyed in S ina i . D r M u r r a y and M r s Wheeler were both on the committee of the Br i t i sh School of Archaeology i n Egypt , and I was one of the students chosen for the work. Here for the first time I was doing what I really wanted to do - excavating on an E g y p t i a n site, even i f not strictly w i th in the bounds of the country itself. I only regretted that I had not devoted myself entirely to Egyptology du r ing the year I had spent in E n g l a n d studying. A t least I had learnt the elements of hieroglyphs, thanks to D r M u r r a y , and had also acquired a certain knowledge of the objects, due to my studies in the Petrie Co l l ec t ion at Un ive r s i t y College. But , perhaps everything had turned out for the best, for i f I had done the Egyptology D i p l o m a I should st i l l have had a year to go and so wou ld not have been able to go to S ina i .
