ABSTRACT

Reference was made in the previous chapter to the difficulties facing monitoring and policing of remote areas. The management of natural resources in regions such as Roraima is particularly conducive to the use of remote sensing (RS) techniques and geographical information systems (GIS). The lack of existing resource data, difficulty of ground access and isolation, combined with a dense forest cover and large area of protected reserves, provides remote sensing methods with both a challenge and an opportunity. Various techniques can be employed to collect data which would otherwise be impossible to acquire accurately or comprehensively.
