The anonymous Greek text known as the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea is a merchant! pilot's guide to the ports and products encountered on the sea voyage from the Red Sea to India and beyond. It is the single most informative surviving document of the trade between the Roman Empire and ancient India, but despite the wealth ofdetail it provides for the historian, its use has been limited by the controversy that surrounds its date.
