ABSTRACT

THE EARLIEST FORM OF the pivotal, and yet, diversely interpreted Buddhist doctrine of Dependent Co-origination (pratitya-samutpiida) is that of the dviidasa-nidiina, the so-called 'Gautama's chain' or 'Twelve Links of Causation'. After a session of the combined University of Washington/University of British Columbia seminar on Buddhist Dependent Co-origination,2 Professor Leon Hurvitz sang to the tune of Managua, Nicaragua:

Pratityasamutpiida is a wonderful thing. Avidya means that you don't have to know anything. ~c;aJ?1,skara means 'confection', such as Chocolate Delight.
