Final Power Struggles

The period between Lin Biao's disappearance in September 1971, and the inauguration of a nationwide campaign 'to criticise Lin Biao and Confucius' (pi Lin pi Kong) in January 1974, was marked by an unusual calm in terms of mass campaigns. In 1971, the movement to purify class ranks was still in full swing, but it lost much of its momentum during the following year, partly because an overwhelming number of 'class enemies' had already been unmasked, and partly because the Lin Biao affair had diverted the attention of the leadership to more pressing matters.
