ABSTRACT
Over a period of almost 100 years, the Japanese people were told that dialects were bad and ugly and had to be eradicated, that good Japanese citizens should not use dialects under any circumstances and that the very existence of varying dialects around Japan was a shame to the sovereignty of the nation.
