ABSTRACT
The previously entrenched policy of keeping the armed forces isolated from the mainstream of India's national affairs had been abandoned by 1959. Long -had the Indian army been an institution of which the country could be proud. In Nagaland, where it should have been an instrument of the state, it had instead been encouraged to become the bully-boy agent to be pitted against those Delhi wished to make reluctant Indian nationals.
