ABSTRACT

Archaeological evidence for the events of the time is largely negative and there is little to show of either Egyptians or indigenous Nubians. In earlier times the C-Group left plentiful evidence of their occupation of the Nile Valley, so it is strange to find so little trace of human occupation for the few hundred years between the withdrawal of the Egyptians and the beginning of a native dynasty. This may be due to the accident of discovery, but in view of the amount of archaeological work done in Lower Nubia it seems unlikely that a substantial population would have left so little trace of their presence and it must be supposed that there was a considerable decrease of population. This, as on other similar occasions, may have been due to changes in river level and reduction in the amount of cultivable land.
