ABSTRACT

The amalgamation of three schools would not normally be considered a propitious occasion for the introduction of staff appraisal: nevertheless, amalgamation, like drowning, concentrates the mind exceedingly and in this case focused it positively on the morale and well-being of staff. School closure and the redesignation of staff had been trauma enough; but the rapid development of a new learning environment and the welding together of three sets of staff from schools of differing philosophies, posed particular problems which had to be solved as soon as possible for the sake of the pupils if no-one else.
