ABSTRACT

The research project, Urbanism in Islam, was carried out during the years 1988-1991 in Japan, as a program of Scientific Research on Priority Areas under the aegis of the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. It aimed at studying the various aspects of urbanism in Islam in comparative perspective. Nearly 200 historians, sociologists, anthropologists, economists, political scientists, urban architects and planners, including 70 scholars from abroad, participated in the program to conduct synchronical and diachronical comparative research, in an attempt to disclose cross-sectional dimensions of urban phenomena with special reference to Islamic urbanism.
