ABSTRACT

JUST beyond Sheikh Othman lies the territory of Aden's neatest neighbour, His Highness the'Abdali Sultan of Lahej, premier chief of the Protectorate. Beyond the police post and barrier on the Dar al 'Arnir road, pas~ing Sheikh Othman, lies the Protectorate. Here the track ahead is in fact the way to the Yemen, for driving through Lahej and the country of the Haushabi Sultan you arrive in the course of a hundred miles or so at Ta'iz. From Ta'iz you can reach Hodeida in a car, and I suppose if you could arrange for fuel and all the permission necessary, and did not irretrievably break down, you could eventually reach London. During the Saudi-Yemeni war the troops of King 'Abdul 'Aziz reached Hodeida in Ford lorries from ]edda, and from]edda Mr. and Mrs. Philby have driven to London.
