ABSTRACT

TOWARDS the end of SUllUllcr 1939 the Resident spoke to me about the Hadhralnaut. During the previous year he had been there himself: by air, on a four-day visit, but he had always felt that we knew far too little about the eastern part of the protectorate and wanted a more thorough examination to be Inade of the country than had yet been possible. He hoped, tOOt that it would be feasible to work for some sort of understanding between the two chief rulers of the countrYt the Qu'aiti Sultan of Mukalla and the Kathiri Sultan of Seiyunt who were hereditary foes.
