This review will focus mainly on dissertations in Bahasa Indonesia by Indonesian archaeologists, which were defended at the University of Indonesia in Jakarta (Universitas Indonesia or UI) and at the University of Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta (Universitas Gadjah Mada or UGM). It will refer selectively to some master’s theses pursued at UI (up till now the only university in Indonesia offering a master’s programme in archaeology), as well as some articles presented at periodical archaeological conferences, called the Pertemuan Ilmiah Arkeologi, organized jointly with a congress of the Association of Indonesian Archaeologists (Ikatan Ahli Arkeologi Indonesia). Owing to limited space, works on palaeontology and palaeoecology will be excluded. The working areas identified are: 1. presentation of new data; 2. new interpretations of existing data; 3. explorations in theory and methodology; and 4. new formulations of scientific problems, or new answers to existing scientific problems. The works mentioned in this survey often combine these working areas. This survey is simply meant to be a report; it does not pretend to offer a thorough assessment.
