ABSTRACT
Rousseau addresses the origin of language as a historical problem, the problem of how humanity came to acquire language, in two texts, briefly in the Second Discourse of 1755, and at greater length in the Essay on the Origin of Languages, published posthumously and probably completed by 1761.1 He also addresses it as a psychological problem, the problem of how the individual child comes to learn a language, in the Emile.
