ABSTRACT

Thefirst.sixhillsofthecitymarchinanalmost straightlinealongtheStamboulshoreoftheGoldenHorn. TheSeventhHillstandsbyitselftowardtheMarmarashore, coveringmostofthesouthwesternpartofStamboul.Its highestpointisattheGateofRomanus{TopKap1),whence itslopesdowntothenorthtowardthevalleyoftheLycus, whichdividesitfromtheSixth,Fifth,andFourthHills, whiletothesauthitapproachesthesea,leavingsometimes awide,sometimesanarrowplainalongtheshore.Our presenttourwilltakeusalongtheMarmaraslopesofthe SeventhHill,throughcneofthemostpleasantandpicturesquepartsofthecity.Thisregion,liketheslopesofthe F'lfthandSixthHillsabovetheGoldenHorn,preserves muchoftheflavorofOttomanStamboul,withitswinding cobbledstreetslinedwitholdwoodenhouses,itsvine-covered teahousessittingundervenerableplane-trees,andits ancientmosquecourtyardsstillservingascommunalcenters astheydidincenturiespast.Thislovelyolddistrictisone ofthemostenchantingquartersofStamboul,andnowhere elseinthecitycanoneenjoymorepleasurablestrollsthan there.
