ABSTRACT

I T was, as I have said, in the best of spirits that I returned on the evening of this Friday, the 12th of April, to the house

of my kind host the Nawwab. I was well pleased with my environment at Shiraz, and more especially with the progress which I had made in cultivating the acquaintance and winning the confidence of the Babis, from whom I had already obtained several precious manuscripts and much valuable information. Onf-the morrow there was to be another picnic in the garden of Rashk-i-Bihisht ("the Envy of Paradise"), and on the following day I was to be allowed to visit the Bab's house. My mind was therefore filled with pleasant anticipations as I entered the Nawwab's house.
