ABSTRACT

I t is tiot generally realized that a tonic can be either a stimulant or a sedative. Herbalists, like homeopaths, do not use tonics in the accepted fa-

miliar sense of the word; they prescribe for whatever is wrong. A relaxed system, or organ, requires toning up or stimulating; an over-stimulated body or brain, or a hyper-active organ, needs soothing and relaxing; and in the vegetable kingdom there are tonics for every condition of the nervous, muscular, or circulatory system, as well as for every organ of the body.
