ABSTRACT

Whether the spirit of tolerance has come to us in the west from our religion or from science and education is not the question. We have had our religious wars; we have experienced what the Arabs in Central Arabia are going through to-day; and we have survived it, and evolved chastened from it-developed into civilized beings who make no pretensions about divine knowledge. To turn the other cheek may be against human nature as it is to-day; but a tooth for a tooth-' one evil to combat another '-is the law of the jungle, is a blot, to say the least, on the name of a people who have had a Prophet to teach them justice and love and equality; and who also have a literature that reflects the higher virtues of the soul and the mind ....
