ABSTRACT

Archreological, ethnological, geographical and natural history investigations were combined in the classic expedition headed by Niebuhr in I763-the mission composed of six members, of whom only the leader lived to return to Europe and give its invaluable results to the world. Again,. the four members of the Egyptian University Expedition of 1936 devoted themselves to several widely different branches of science, as detailed near the end of this chapter. The same applies to the German savants, Rathjens and von Wissmann. Though their results are of the highest value, composite expeditions are not always best suited to the modern specialised methods demanded by entomology in the field.
