ABSTRACT
The preceding chapter identified some major variables accounting for differentiation. It did not, however, discuss the criteria used in ranking individuals in any particular dimension. This chapter deals first with the ranking criteria and then develops a fuller set of demographic variables associated with social differentiation. The third section suggests how these two aspects are related. The chapter concludes with a brief discussion of the relationship of the stratification model to the understanding of social class.
