ABSTRACT

In recent years Japan's presence abroad, has received increasing attention. The emergence of Japan as a world power can be traced with objective indicators such as figures on trade, foreign investment, tourism, foreign aid and levels of participation in international organizations and other forums. It can also be detected in the consciousness of Japanese and non-Japanese alike. In addition to the interest in Japan abroad, the perception of Japan as having an international presence has also developed among Japanese. Japanese studies boom and the proliferation of nihonjinron in Japan and abroad in part reflects the concern with Japan's economic policies and defense strategies, the increased coverage given to Japan's movements in the international arena and the renewed sense of confidence which many Japanese seem to have in discussing issues related to Japan's national interests.
