ABSTRACT

SINCE they have such a passion for nature, it is not surprising to see the important place the Japanese accord to flowers. They have evolved hundreds of new blossoms from many common varieties, changing their forms and colors entirely. Favorite blossoms are an outstanding theme for artists, appearing as they do in designs for decorations on most Japanese objects of commerce. Gentlemen of the highest rank raise orchids and exhibit them with a great deal of pride. Even on a junk where a man and his wife follow one of the lowest modes of existence, managing to eke out only a bare living, a little pot of flowers will almost invariably be seen brightening the deck. Once more appreciation of beauty shows no class distinction.
