ABSTRACT
JAPANESE regimentation of human behavior goes back to the Chou reign in the time of Confucius. I t was the advice of that great sage "to cause the people to follow, but not to cause them to understand." Probably he thought too much discussion of matters was an obstacle to obedience. At any rate ceremonials have come down from his times and have become stereotyped forms throughout the Far East.
