ABSTRACT

A FOREIGN woman making a train trip looked casually out of her window to watch a farewell party, and saw a ] apanese making hasty adieus as he boarded the train, dressed in a frock coat, silk hat and striped trousers. Evidently he was a man of some consequence, and the large gathering of people, waving and yelling "Banzai" as the train pulled out, attested to his popularity. The woman was interested in this man, and was pleased to see that he seated himself in the same car, directly opposite her. The coach had a continuous seat on each side as in our subway cars. As soon as the train left the station this gentleman removed his shoes and stood up on the plush seat. The foreigner was puzzled to see the

tie and collar then removed, followed by the coat, the latter being neatly folded and laid upon the seat. The shirt came off next. and then-yes, the trousers were certainly on their way I, By this time the foreign woman found a great interest in the passing landscape. When she resumed her original position, the gentleman across the aisle was comfortably seated in a kimono, carefully packing his Western clothes so that he could settle down to enjoy the journey in ease and comfort.
