ABSTRACT

It is of interest to note that a formal salutatory response to the Circular was made by a council of the Presbyterian Churches of the United States of America. Rome, I think, passed it by. Convocation, I fear, did not mention it. It is now, I suppose, forgotten by ' all the ecclesiastics in the world,' to whom it was historically-or quixotically-addressed. For my part, I went to Kyoto to 4 interview' its authors, to interview Japanese Buddhism, to meet its Highest Priests, to question them of their Interest, their Authority, their Miracles. With a meek purpose of seeking light, I constituted myself Ambassador-Extraordinary from Christendom to the powers of this Japanese Buddhism which invited Christendom to join hands with it for the 'salvation'—the spiritual salvation, mark you-of China, perishing.
