ABSTRACT

How old are the hillslopes we see around us? This question is fundamental to all attempts to explain the diversity of hillslope form. Without a timescale for the evolution of hillslopes under the action of particular processes and an awareness of the length of time that hillslopes persist in the landscape after their formative processes are no longer active, it is impossible to establish relationships between hillslope form and the factors which control it. These issues and their consequences are examined in this chapter.
