ABSTRACT

ALTHOUGH the older Nabatrean structures are undeniably the most curious and interesting of all the tombs of Petra, the so-called Treasure House

of Pharaoh is certainly the most beautiful. It owes much to its position, whether it be seen from the dark ravine of the Siq, or whether it be seen from the inside surrounded by overhanging cliffs. The soft flame colour of the sandstone which forms the greater part of the

fa~de contrasts with the cream colour of the sculptured entablature; the mass of green bushes makes a foreground that must be even more effective when the pink flowers of the oleander are in bloom.
