ABSTRACT

The architrave over the door is ornamented by shields between triglyphs ; over it there is a window with three more in the attic ; in the centre are two figures in basso-relievo. To right and left of the raised terrace are colonnades of pillars of the Ionic order, standing out from the wall of rock that forms the side of the enclosure. This feature is quite new to Petra, or rather to the remains of pre-Roman Petra that we know; no doubt there were many such in the town in the valley that has vanished from our ken.
