ABSTRACT

Indo-China in its primeval state was probably entirely covered with dense forest. About one-seventh of the area of the country has been cleared, and the forests so extensively modified as to produce savanna or parkland in another three-sevenths. The remainder, amounting to about 300,000 sq. km., is still covered with dense forest though, as will be explained later, the larger part of this is of secondary origin. Only about 5 % of Great Britain is covered with forest (including open woodland and coppice under this heading), while the comparable figure for Indo-China is between 70 and 80 %. The following table, based on an evaluation made in 1925, gives the forest area in each state and the percentage of the total area of each state which is covered by forest.
