ABSTRACT

There are as many facets to life in Japan as in America, in England, or elsewhere. Here and there a book may be written that catches the reflected light from more than one such. A few books have attempted to revolve about the whole life of this people and this nation of Japan, to give a photograph of the unit: I believe the result is usually the bedazzled confusion of the beholder. AlII ask is that those who read the pages to follow remember that they do not picture Japan in its entirety, but give only the reaction created by a glimpse of life, past and present, in Japan. They will be more enjoyed, pleasured, even understood I believe, if read piecemeal and at many short sittings instead of continuously.
