ABSTRACT

AT its sixth session, 25th October, 451, the Council of Chalcedon promulgated its Definition of Faith. The Definition affirms that our Lord Jesus Christ is one Person in two Natures.1 The Emperors Marcian 450t7, and Pulcheria 450-t3, were present in state at the promulgation. They probably thought that they had given peace to the Church: and Marcian immediately accorded civil sanction to the decision of the Council by Si quis igitur2 forbidding disputations against it. But a reaction set in which extended over the reigns of four Emperors, and lasted for seventy years, before a settlement was reached under the House of Justin.
