Tradition and its Uses: Business and Ideology in Japanese Domestic Tourism

Modern Japan is widely regarded as a society saturated with traditions. This is a notion which has often been emphasized both in Japan and in Western countries, in discourses and in narratives. These traditions are often seen as organic links which unite present generations to past generations. The notion of culturally especially powerful traditions in Japan is intensified by the modern media which often shows us the stereotypes of a culture (e.g. Moeran 1996).
