ABSTRACT

The year of Ne or Nezumi (mouse) by the old Japanese calendar, is a year of abundant food and much activity. Oldfashioned people still consult the lunar calendar to decide on what day to go on a journey or open a new business. They believe that the day's fortune will decide the final result of business transactions or trips started. The nihyakutoka and nihyaku-hatsuka are the days when terrible typhoons are expected to visit Japan from southern regions to cause serious damages to farm crops. To the farmers typhoons are the most dread enemy. For ages, they have studied the natural phenomena that preceded the coming of typhoons, in an attempt and hope of learning beforehand the enemy's arrival so that they might be ready for the coming destruction. Doyo fixes the seasonal period and governs crops. Farmers set their activities by it.
