ABSTRACT

There has not always been a "problem" of population in Mauritius. There is one now. It was judged of such urgency early in the 1950's that a committee was appointed to consider its dimensions and its probable effects on the standard of living of the people. The majority of the committee, reporting in 1955, urged the need for education in family planning, since they concluded that if population growth were not limited by voluntary means it would be compulsorily limited in a few decades by rising mortality.*

At the end of our report, in Chapter 12, we repeat and summarise some of the main facts which result from our re-examination of the problem. We then outline our proposals for the introduction and development of population policies which we see as an integral part of our recommendations in the social policy field.
