ABSTRACT

However, the observed change of life expectancy of the USSR population is in many respects determined by mortality changes in Russia, the largest and most populous republic. The republic comprises dozens of ethnic groups, and the 73 provinces account for about half of all territorial units in the country. Russia is heterogeneous not only geographically and socioeconomically, but also demographically. It would be logical to expect that Russia’s regions have different levels of life expectancy.
