ABSTRACT

Marcus Garvey was born in St. Ann’s Bay, Jamaica. His father was said to be descended from the “Maroons,” a name given slaves who escaped to the uninhabited districts of Jamaica and Latin America and who, because of their resourcefulness, power, and military organization, were greatly feared by the surrounding white communities. Marcus Garvey’s early education was sketchy, but he was apprenticed to a printer, became a master printer, and finally foreman of one of the largest printing plants in Jamaica.
