ABSTRACT

You can only control an organisation effectively if you have constant and upto-date knowledge of how its resources are performing. You have two primary areas of resource: people and money. In previous chapters we have talked at length about people, in this chapter we will talk about money. Nothing in management happens in a vacuum. Much the same as Newton’s Law, everything is subject to an action which stimulates or prompts a reaction. If you cut an exhibition budget you should expect a reduction in output from the exhibition department; this may well be followed by a lowering in staff morale in your workshops which, in turn will be noticed by the visitors who will complain to the attendants. If you are lucky, the attendants may tell you they are receiving complaints - if not you may never know until you find the finances still do not balance as visitor numbers fall off. A downwards spiral is difficult to control and your intelligence system is essential to prevent this.
