ABSTRACT

In 1607 Susinyos wrote to King Philip of Spain and Pope Paul V and solicited aid. His letters reflecting his own difficult position and the Galla threat to Ethiopia were probably written on the advice of the captain of the Portuguese or Pero Paez.1 But his close relations with the Jesuits and the increasing influence of Pero Paez over him began in 1610, when back in Dembiya with his camp near the Jesuit centre in Gorgora he frequently met with the missionaries.2
