ABSTRACT
The United States entered the Second World War committed to the strategy of devoting the nation's primary efforts to the Atlantic and European areas. If Japan entered the war, strategy in the Pacific would be defensive until the fate of Germany was sealed. It was then ironic that the first significant American offensives took place in the Pacific against Japan and in North Africa against the Vichy French.
